Hi <<First Name>>,
Welcome to Great British Podcasts - providing great podcast rex!
Frequent readers of this newsletter will know about The Listeners’ Choice Award, the only award at the British Podcast Awards where the winner is entirely chosen by you. This week the current top 20 was unveiled, giving us a clue of the podcast that might win. But, of course, it can all change before voting closes on the 5th September.
In alphabetical order, the current runners and riders are Betwixt The Sheets (a history podcast that tells you all of the stories your teacher mysteriously ignored), Chasin’ The Racin’ (which looks at the thrilling world of motorbike racing) and Crime Analyst (which explores why bad crimes happen, rather than just who did them.)
Next, there’s Elis James and John Robins (a podcast featuring moments from their BBC Radio 5 Live show), Help I Sexted My Boss (where Jordan North and William Hanson solve your etiquette dilemmas) and Live, Laugh, Love - LadBaby (the podcast by the people who always manage to make the Christmas Number One.)
There’s also RedHanded (the true crime podcast that has won the Listeners’ Award not once, but twice!), Saving Grace (a show by the TikTok star GKBarry), Should I Delete That? (Alex Light and Em Clarkson reflect on embarrassment), Staying Relevant (Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks on the perils of modern fame) and That UFO podcast (a show that looks up to the stars.)
Rounding off the list is The Girls Bathroom (where best friends Sophia and Cinzia share gossip and solve dilemmas), The Receipts Podcast (unfiltered conversation between Tolly T, Audrey and Milena), The Socially Distant Sports Bar (the comedy sports podcast), The Therapy Couch (Abbey Claney and Peter Crouch couples therapy), The Useless Hotline (Max Balegde and George Clarke spill tea) and Uncanny (a trip into the paranormal with Danny Robins.)
Vote for your favourite podcast by heading to the British Podcast Awards website.

WEEKLY PICKS |
The Telegraph Women's Sport podcast |
The rise of Women’s Sport can be seen through the rise in comprehensive sports coverage on television and in the press. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t more work to do, as this new informative podcast explores. Hosted by the Olympian and BBC broadcaster Sam Quek, each episode delves into issues and challenges athletes are facing, from insecure funding to the challenge of coaching.
An unmissable episode was a discussion about motherhood and the difficulty of balancing your time between raising a young child whilst competing in elite sport. There are frank discussions about the pressure to compete not long after giving birth and the lack of adequate support that exists within the industry.
“You can always have a plan in place when it comes to childbirth,” says Quek. “But before you know it, you are in a 48 hour labour, you are having an emergency C-section, but you are expected to get up and crack on without that support.”

WEEKLY PICKS |
When Science Finds a Way |
A new podcast by the Wellcome Trust that lifts the lid on the latest developments and research in science and technology. Hosted by the actor Alisha Wainwright, the podcast manages to be rich enough that you learn a lot about an issue that you didn’t know before, whilst not becoming too intellectual that you don’t know what on earth the scientists are talking about.
Episodes so far explore how our changing climate will affect our global food supply and the necessity of human infection trials. I was particularly engaged in an episode that looked at disrupted sleep patterns, and its relationship with mental health. And if you’re tired (who isn’t) there’s some interesting and detailed tips for better sleep.

WEEKLY PICKS |
Armchair Explorer |
This great audio travel podcast is back with their first episode of 2023. In each episode you’re transported to a different part of the world to hear about a ridiculous adventure, voiced by the person who did it, accompanied with immersive sound design. It really does make you feel like you’re experiencing what they are. And it makes you all the more inspired to step away from the computer and get outside.
The first episode of the new series follows Rinker Buck who attempted to cross the Oregon Trail in a wagon, with mules pulling it the old fashioned way, since the 1880s. Nothing like this has been attempted for more than 100 years.

WEEKLY PICKS |
Emily Blackwell's Mother Half |
The best way to find out about someone is not always from chatting to them; it can be from speaking to their loved ones. It is this idea that drives this new podcast hosted by Emily Blackwell from Made in Chelsea. It is the typical chat podcast affair for fans, but her co-host is her Mum, Rachel. You can also read an interview with them both on Podcast Rex.

If you’re still on the hunt for new podcasts, remember to listen out to Your Next Podcast. In each episode broadcaster Lauren Layfield recommends a show AND includes the first episode of it too. In an age of try before you buy, hearing the first episode of each is very much a ‘listen before you subscribe.
We’ll be back next Sunday with another podcast newsletter and remember there will be more podcast recommendations, clips and stories on our new website Podcast Rex, all week.
